task-observer: the skill that watches your sessions and improves your whole toolkit
task-observer is a Claude Code skill that sits in the background during your sessions and watches. It logs patterns, records corrections you make to the agent's work, notes gaps in existing skills, and at review time proposes specific updates to installed skills — plus candidates for skills you do not have yet. It also files improvements for itself.
When it shines
If you have a growing library of skills and keep noticing the same gap — "why does the agent always miss X" or "I always have to add this instruction" — task-observer is the layer that turns those observations into tracked, reviewable proposals rather than a mental note you will forget. At 10k+ installs and 80+ contributors, it has clearly struck a nerve.
The human-review gate is designed well: it does not modify your installed skills directly. Scheduled reviews write only to staged copies; you approve changes explicitly. That is the right call for something that touches your whole toolkit.
The real caveat
Installing the skill file alone is not enough. You have to either add an activation instruction to your CLAUDE.md manually (instructions live in references/environments.md inside the bundle) or install the session-start hook. Skip that step and the skill under-triggers badly — description matching on its own reliably misses it. The README calls this out, but it is easy to breeze past if you just run npx skills add and call it done.
On Claude.ai web and mobile (no filesystem access), task-observer produces a handoff document instead of writing observation logs. If that is your main environment, you get the observations as a document to read — not a living, self-updating log.
Try it
npx skills add rebelytics/one-skill-to-rule-them-all --skill task-observer
# then follow activation in references/environments.mdAfter a few sessions of real work, check skill-observations/observation-log/. If it is empty, the activation did not take — go back and add the CLAUDE.md instruction or hook.
